Our Programs Individual and Family Therapy ► Children ages 3-18 receive specialized therapy to help them recover from sexual or physical abuse. Parents and caregivers can join and assist their children in the process of recovery. Family and Individual Therapy is provided by clinicians with expertise in the treatment of family abuse or neglect. More Parent Assessments ► Families referred for assessment receive a thorough, objective and culturally relevant evaluation of their family functioning. This assessment includes a parent interview, a family observation, individual interviews with all children in the family who are age 3 or older and perhaps interviews with other interested parities. Sometimes paper and pencil measures are used as part of the evaluation. Parent assessments are approached with a desire to reflect the family strengths and weaknesses along with recommendations aimed at resolving concerns about child safety within each family. More Solid Starts ► Is an educational, support and mentoring program that works with high risk families during their pregnancy and the child’s first year of life. Our Solid Starts program assists families who are facing any number of challenges including: isolation from community, economic struggles, mental health issues, a history of child abuse or domestic violence, or those in need of extra support and parenting information. Solid Starts is provided on site in two medical clinics in the south Minneapolis area. Parents are empowered with new skills and resources as they bring a child into the community. Past participants co-lead the group as mentors, and one group includes families from our growing Hispanic community and is conducted by a native Spanish speaker. More In Home Parent Program ► Provided to families involved with the state child protection services, FEC provides, upon request, In- Home Parent Training. This program was developed at the request of Hennepin County due to their confidence in the quality of our services at FEC. Stranger Danger and Beyond ►
A curriculum based program developed with the goal of protecting youth from sexual abuse. The program takes a holoistic approach through strengthening families and increasing parent protection skills. The curriculum is used in partnerships with several community organizations including: Headstart, Hired, Early Childhood Family Education, The Rotary, and many places of worship. Over 500 families have benefited from practicing communication skills, problem solving difficult risk situations, and learning facts that will help them make sound supervisory decisions. More
Circle of Friends ►
![]() A group for girls ages 12 to 15 in collaboration with the City Limits affordable housing complex in Minneapolis. Youth learn about healthy relationship patterns, red flags for abuse, and how to respond in social situations to keep safe from violence. The goal of this program is to empower "tween" and teen girls to act in positive ways and develop support systems along with skills to aid in increasing self-esteem-- a powerful program that guides and inspires young teens to thrive!
Families Moving Forward: Healing Children from Sexual Abuse ►
A support, education and therapy group for families in which a child has been sexually abused, with an emphasis on prevention skills and rebuilding a healthy family lifestyle. It is the only professionally facilitated therapy group for families in the metro area serving parents struggling with this situation.
Circle of Parents ►
A new support group offered through FEC in collaboration with Prevent Child Abuse MN. Open to any parent who feels alone, at wits end and frustrated, this casual group meets weekly to take a deep breath and discuss their parenting issues with other parents. Facilitated by volunteers (parents too!), what better way to find support, gain insight and get fresh ideas than from other parents who are experiencing similar issues to your own. More
